I've been concentrating on the back yard these last few weeks of 'sheltering in place.' The weeds had really taken over the border areas of our pretty large yard, and I needed to get to work at removing them.
My tool of choice is the 'hula-hoe,' also known as the action hoe, stirrup hoe, and hoop hoe.
I've learned to respect its efficiency and ease of use in these weeks, as it slices through the soil without displacing it and really handles weeds of all sizes.
I remember my father buying one of these tools back in the early 60's, when they first came out. I believe they originated here in California, but I'm not sure of that. Hawaii gained statehood in 1959. The 'hula hoop' was invented in 1958 and this tool in 1961. Back in those days, before a lot of people could afford a trip to Hawaii, I think there was a fascination with anything to do with those exotic islands. That may have helped with the popularity of anything with 'hula' in its name.
Peace to all, and tend to your gardens.
I learned so many new facts from this little post! I love the animation of your hula-hoe too!
