Pico Gavilán Worked on this illustration for quite awhile. I needed a new tailgate wrap for my Tacoma. The old TwissArts wrap (see the rendering below) was getting kinda tired (I'd had it for five years or so), and quite frankly it was very hard to read. I knew I wanted to do something that would tie in to Old Alta California history, pre-statehood. The first thought was to do a rendering of a favorite Californio pastime: a rousing bull and grizzly bear fight, common in the late 1700s and early 1800s. A bear was captured – this back in the days when grizzlies still roamed the area; the last one in California (and mind you, this is our state animal) was killed in the early 1910s – and thrown into a ring with a mad bull. Bets were taken to see which animal would make it away from the confrontation alive. Yeah, a pretty cruel and bloody sport... which is why my wife vetoed that idea. TRAVUS T. HIPP, 1937-2012 There was once an FM radio station in Gilroy, California called KFAT, and it played... well, how would you describe it? Progressive country? Alternative rock? Yeah, that, and a whole lot more. Listening to that station in the late 70s and early 80s is how I first learned of Travus T. Hipp (aka: Chandler Laughlin). But he had been part of the Bay Area radio scene since 1960... at KSAN, KHIP, KZAP and other places behind call letters. KFAT became KPIG in the late 80s, and station headquarters relocated over the hill in Freedom, just east of Santa Cruz. KPIG is still in business, and the music is still good, with a mix that guarantees it a preset button on my radio dial. Travus remained a part of KPIG until his death in 2012, phoning his political commentaries in from Silver City, Nevada. He gave listeners 'all the news you never knew you needed to know--until now.'

Left-handed Drawing The illustration shown here was done on a Wacom tablet with my left hand. It is digital, and it was necessary to draw southpaw because about a month ago I dropped a huge cabinet on my right hand while kneeling on the garage floor preparing for our impending move. I won't go into all the sordid details, as I have told and retold the story a couple of dozen times in the intervening three weeks, and I am tired of telling it. Plus, the more I tell it, the madder I get at myself. I messed it up badly enough that I had to have surgery 11 days ago. There are a couple of tiny plates and a little tiny pin in my right ring finger. I am waiting 10 more days to see the hand doctor and find out how the healing is going and what kind of rehabilitation I will need. I have really messed it up, it seems.
