National Artichoke Hearts Day

National Artichoke Hearts Day

March 16

Posting this in honor of that crazy edible thistle, the artichoke. Just to the north of my little town of Salinas is the smaller town of Castroville, the undisputed artichoke capitol of the world.

A fact that is little known in places other than this place: in 1947 Marilyn Monroe, before gaining fame on the silver screen, was crowned Artichoke Queen in the first official Artichoke Festival.

I also want to recognize the hardships faced by residents of Castroville and the community of Pajaro, just north of it. The recent 'atmospheric rivers' that have pounded California have done particularly hard damage to homes and farms, displacing thousands due to flooding. More rain coming next week.

Full disclosure on the image accompanying this bit of trite verbiage... I completed it in an AI art generating piece of web programming. I am only mildly impressed and I realize that I will not be abandoning my own somewhat suspect artistic talent. For me, there is really no sense of satisfaction or artistic achievement in writing a text prompt and hitting the 'create' button. I'm not dissing AI creations in total. They have a place and a function and hold some value to some people, I guess.

Peace to all, and keep the waders handy.
