Next!
(Note to those who have lost folks who were near to them and dear to them: sorry for the graphic graphic above, and sorry for the flippant attitude expressed below. I grieve for the country, but I can't say the same thing for our lawmakers or the NRA, who seem to have boxcar loads of thoughts and prayers at the ready. But this little note is getting into the meat of the text below... So, next!)
Yesterday's news of another school mass shooting in Georgia didn't stay top news very long. In fact, on many news platforms it was practically buried sixth or seventh down in the list... behind Trump and Harris and their this and that. Not enough loss. Not enough carnage. Not enough blood. And maybe the news, and the American people, will just wait for the next one... and the next one... and the next one.
Not to be crass or vulgar (what are words, compared to the fatal frequent violence we live with on a daily basis here in the U.S.?), but what lawmaker in this country, Democrat or Republican, is willing to stand up the NRA? Who among them gives a shit?
The NRA used to be a valuable organization. When I was much younger, 60 or so years ago, I took a gun safety course sponsored by the NRA. Had to pass the course to get a hunting license. Sometime in the intervening years, when Charlton Heston had nothing better to do than become their lackey, the NRA decided that the Second Amendment was holy and vulnerable with any mention of controls on access to guns, ammo, and bump stocks, and the Assn got heavy into politics, lobbying both sides of the aisle.
But getting back to the carnage. Here's a link to a database on mass shootings since 2006, put together by James Alan Fox, Lipman Family Professor of Criminology, Law, and Public Policy at Northeastern University. Lotta folks have died. News of these deaths doesn't warrant more than a 'meh' from our news media or our lawmakers. So let's all just sit around and wait for the next one... and the next one... and the next...
Peace to all (gad, this time that wish sticks in the craw), and pass the ammo,
